Explosion rocks Nigeria’s police headquarters

Blasts are becoming rampant in Nigeria

There was a bomb blast at Nigeria’s Police Force headquarters, right in the heart of the capital, Abuja, this morning.  The  explosion, which occurred  at the complex’s expansive car park,  took men and officers  by surprise, sending the personel on duty in a panic. Details of the incident are still sketchy and casualty figures can’t  be confirmed yet as the police headquarters had been cordoned off. A police source however said the two men suspected to have driven into the complex with the explosive died in the incident. Windows of some offices in the complex, he said, were also shattered. The incident  has caused a serious traffic jam in the area and security operatives – soldiers, secret service operatives and policemen – were seen scrutinizing vehicles passing through adjourning streets with bomb detectors.

The incident happened two days after Nigeria’s police chief, Hafiz Ringim, visited Maiduguri, in the Northern part of the country to explore ways of ending the spate of bombings there. A group, Boko Haram, which is opposed to western education has, at different times, bombed several parts of the city, killing hundreds.

Of recent, bombs have also gone off at various locations in the capital, Abuja.
