Hungry police officers collapse at independence parade

Three police officers, one of them a woman, collapsed during the 51st  Independence anniversary celebration at the Government House, Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Saturday .

The police officers were on parade with their colleagues when they collapsed one after the other.

First to go down was an assistant superintendent.  The others followed. They were given first aid treatment in an ambulance.

A doctor who attended to the officers said the ASP suffered from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) because he went to the parade on an empty stomach and stood in the sun for too long.

Police officers are poorly paid in Nigeria, with some of them unable to afford three square meals. They do not have decent accommodation, and their uniforms almost always look thorn and tattered.
